Will Richards
Founder & CEO - EthicsVision International
Will Richards joined the Metropolitan Police Service at 19, having left school without a degree and no clear career plan. He spent ten years in policing, starting in uniform response before qualifying as a detective and working across CID teams. He later specialised in anti-corruption investigations, focusing on internal misconduct and integrity risks. During this time, he completed a Master’s degree in International Criminal Justice, driven by a growing ambition to build a career beyond policing.
But like many professionals in public sector investigation roles, he found that moving on wasn’t easy.
The roles he felt qualified for were intensely competitive, often attracting hundreds of applicants from similar policing or enforcement backgrounds. It was difficult to stand out in a pool of people with almost identical experience. At the same time, the idea of changing careers entirely, and moving into something unrelated to investigation work, often meant starting again from scratch in entry-level positions. All of this was set against the stability of policing: a steady income and pension that made walking away feel risky. Taken together, these factors made it feel easier and safer to stay, even when he knew he wanted to move on.
In the nine years since leaving the police, Will has built a wide-ranging career in global investigations and integrity work. He has led investigation and ethics functions at some of the world’s most high-profile organisations, including the BBC, Oxfam, and Transparency International. He has conducted investigations in more than 30 countries across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Caribbean, and has been based in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain. He now runs EthicsVision, a consultancy working with major international clients on ethics, whistleblowing, and corporate investigations.
Since leaving policing, Will has also led multiple recruitment processes for investigation and integrity roles. Through reviewing hundreds of applications from current and former public sector investigators, he has developed a clear understanding of what makes these applications stand out — and where many go wrong.
