Investigation Report Writing in Workplace Investigations Training

Course Overview

Join our industry leading experts for a half-day investigation report writing workshop in Gerrards Cross, UK.

When? 12th February 2026, 13:30 - 17:00

Where? Crowne Plaza, Gerrards Cross, Beaconsfield, HP9 2XE, United Kingdom

Clear, well-structured investigation reports are critical to fair and defensible workplace investigations. They inform decisions, support HR processes, and are often relied upon by senior leaders, risk committees, and other internal or external stakeholders. Yet many investigators are expected to produce high-quality reports without having received focused, practical training on how to do so.

This practical, half-day Investigation Report Writing course is designed for HR and non-HR investigators, case handlers, and investigation leads who are responsible for drafting or reviewing investigation reports. The session focuses on producing reports that are clear, objective, and suitable for different purposes, including HR processes and disciplinaries, governance and risk oversight, and wider stakeholder review.

The course is delivered through instructor-led learning, practical exercises, and examples drawn from actual workplace and whistleblowing-related investigations.

Detailed and practical - a rare concoction from my experience of corporate training. It provided equal levels of real life examples, with theoretical exercises that could genuinely support my work in the future. Would highly recommend to anyone working in corporate investigations.
— Speak Up Manager - International Aid Sector

What you’ll learn

This course focuses on the key elements of effective investigation report writing, helping participants organise complex information and communicate findings in a fair, professional, and defensible manner.

Learning outcomes include (click to expand):

    • Understanding the purpose of investigation reports and how this shapes structure and content

    • Writing reports suitable for different audiences and uses, including HR processes and disciplinaries, senior leadership and risk committees, and internal or external stakeholders

    • Choosing appropriate report structures for clarity, proportionality, and defensibility

    • Organising narrative, findings, analysis, and recommendations in a clear and logical way

    • Translating complex, sensitive, or conflicting evidence into clear and balanced narrative

    • Distinguishing fact from inference, opinion, and assumption

    • Weighing evidence and explaining how conclusions are reached

    • Handling uncertainty and evidential gaps transparently

    • Drafting fair, objective findings that align with the investigation scope

    • Writing conclusions that are clearly grounded in the evidence

    • Avoiding overstatement, ambiguity, and implied judgement

    • Ensuring findings are suitable for onward HR and governance decision-making

    • Using clear, neutral language for sensitive and high-risk matters

    • Managing confidential and sensitive information appropriately, including whistleblowing disclosures and protected information

    • Awareness of legal, data protection, and disclosure considerations

    • Using appendices, exhibits, and supporting material effectively

Why this matters

Investigation reports are often the lasting record of how an organisation responded to an issue. Poorly written reports can undermine otherwise sound investigations, create confusion, and expose organisations to challenge.

A well-written investigation report:

  • Clearly explains what was examined and why

  • Demonstrates fairness and thoroughness

  • Supports HR processes, disciplinaries, and appeals

  • Enables informed oversight by senior leaders and risk committees

  • Withstands scrutiny from regulators, tribunals, and other external bodies

This course helps investigators produce reports that stand up to scrutiny and support confident, defensible decision-making.

Who should attend

This course is suitable for professionals involved in workplace investigations, including:

  • HR and People teams

  • Internal investigators and case handlers

  • Compliance, ethics, and integrity professionals

  • Safeguarding, risk, security, or audit teams

  • Anyone responsible for drafting, reviewing, or relying on investigation reports

No prior specialist report writing training is required. The course is equally valuable for those new to report writing and those seeking to refine their approach.

I would highly recommend this to anyone, regardless of experience as I have come away from this course a much more confident individual within my new role
